Writing Units Developmental Programme – spring term modules:

Former National Strategies Consultant Participants will receive a unique unit pack in addition to extensive IT resources that meet the expectations of the new national curriculum in a dynamic and stimulating manner, providing a fabulous collection of ideas and resources to inspire and promote creative writing and reading.

Writing Units Y5/Y6

Target Group: Year 5 and 6 teachers, new to Year 5 and 6 teachers, literacy coordinators, KS2 leaders, assistant headteachers, teaching assistants working in upper KS2.

An exciting and extensive unit of work, including a wealth of differentiated resources, media and ICT, to develop reading and writing for Upper KS2

The unit is based on two short stories from Bill Naughton’s ’The Goalkeeper’s Revenge’ preceded by an additional ‘part-unit’ with a focus on life in the 1930s that provides background and context to his narrative.


Writing Units Y5/Y6

Target Group: Year 5 and 6 teachers, new to Year 5 and 6 teachers, literacy coordinators, KS2 leaders, assistant headteachers, teaching assistants working in upper KS2.

An exciting and extensive unit of work including a wealth of differentiated resources, media and ICT to develop writing and reading for Year 5 and 6 based upon the new national curriculum.

The unit, which will be based upon Cressida Cowell’s ’How To Train Your Dragon’ novel and film tie-in it will also contain an additional unit that focuses upon dragons which provides background and context to the narrative and also serves as an independent mini unit.

AN UPPER KS2 TEXT-BASED UNIT OF WORK TO INSPIRE AND SUPPORT WRITING AND READING

Target group: Y4/5 and 5 teachers, new to Y4, 5 and 6 teachers, literacy coordinators, KS2 leaders, assistant headteachers and teaching assistants working in upper KS2.

An exciting and extensive unit of work, including a wealth of differentiated resources, media and ICT, to develop reading and writing for KS2

The unit is based on Anthony Browne’s ‘ZOO’ accompanied by an additional ‘part-unit’ that focuses on reading and writing opportunities around the topic of zoos that provides background and context to the narrative.

Prepared and presented by Deborah Ainscoe (Headteacher Old Hall Primary, former Primary Literacy Consultant and LA writing moderator), Mike Ainscoe (Former Primary Strategy Consultant). There will be examples of how the unit has been tried and tested within a school context and the development of reading and writing skills.

To enable the participants to:

Gain awareness of the administrative procedures in respect of the national curriculum assessment process. Become familiar with the statutory requirements of STA’s KS1 moderation process and the moderation process in Bury schools.

Become familiar with some of the teaching and learning implications of the Year 2 National Curriculum in preparation for statutory assessment.

*This is not statutory training so non-members will be charged £95 to attend


Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Assessment Training for Year 6

Teachers : Moderation of English writing focus

Course objectives:

To enable the participants to:

  • Gain awareness of the administrative procedures in respect of the National Curriculum assessment process.
  • Become familiar with the statutory requirements of STA’s KS2 moderation process and the moderation process in Bury schools.
  • Consider the important changes to the ‘Teacher assessment frameworks at the end of key stage 2’ in respect of the teacher assessment of writing.

Course content:

  • An up-date regarding statutory assessment requirements for 2018
  • The LA’s moderation visit procedures and visit schedule
  • Statutory teacher assessment of English writing to include important revisions to STA’s guidance (‘a more flexible approach’, independent writing, spelling, handwriting etc. )
