Gaining Greater Depth in Writing in Year 6

Cost: Free to members of BEST Trust otherwise £175

Target Group: Y5/6 Teachers and English leads in UKS2

Course Leader:  Dawn Robertson
Course Objectives:
In this engaging and lively course Dawn Robertson, English Consultant, will demonstrate how to assess pupils’ writing accurately and then use a wide variety of different texts and activities to ensure that pupils are challenged and stimulated to reach greater depth.

Course content:
Underpinning the day will be an in-depth study of the writing expectations for Year 6 pupils with a close analysis of the end of KS2 2019 Teacher Assessment Report and writing exemplification materials, which will ensure that teachers feel really confident about the elements that need to be addressed to gain greater depth in Year 6. The aim of this first session, is to have consistency when assessing writing and a clear understanding about what the child has achieved and where to take them next.  Invaluable materials will be shared to support this.

Time will then be spent focusing on the key elements that pupils will need to be taught and the breadth of experiences they should be given, in order to achieve their full potential as confident writers and gain Greater Depth, if appropriate.

Quality texts and film clips will be used throughout the day and teachers will be shown a wide variety of writing that pupils have produced in response to them.

During the training a number of engaging strategies and resources will be used that can be taken immediately back into the classroom to stimulate and invigorate teaching and learning. Resource materials, to support this, will be included as part of the training session and sent to the teachers after they have attended the day.
