Course Objectives:
To enable the participants to:

  • To be confident in the delivery, assessment and tracking of the Letters and Sounds Phase 2, 3 and 4.
  • To understand the principles that supports the delivery of high quality phonics and the importance of this in preparing children for Year 1.
  • To understand the importance in providing a language rich environment to support children’s learning and development through play.
  • To ensure provision and resources provide opportunities for children to apply phonics independently.  

Course content:

  • To revisit and clarify subject knowledge – terminology.
  • Loyalty to a chosen phonics programme. Which programmes are being used?
  • What is the approach to teaching and learning of phonics in your class? School?
  • Sharing of fun reading/spelling  games to support ‘practise’ and ‘apply’ part of Phases 2, 3 and 4
  • How are parents informed about supporting phonics at home?
  • How is phonics assessed in your school? Tracking? Transition from to Year 1?
  • Understanding what will come up on the phonics check in Year 1?
  • Planning your trajectory – Will your children be Phase 3 secure at the end of Reception?

Attendees are asked to arrive at the school by 9.15am to enable a prompt start to the session. Limited car parking is available on site with additional on-road parking opposite to the school.

Professional ID badges should be presented on arrival for the training.
