Improving Phonics in the Year 1 Classroom : Session 2 Preparing for the Phonics Check

Target Group: Teachers and teaching assistants working with children in Year 1. Priority will be given to attendees at Session 1  on 8th November 2018

Course Objectives:
To enable the participants to:
i)            To observe a phonics lesson
ii)          To look at strategies for supporting borderline children
iii)         To look at administering the Phonics Screening Check
iv)         To look at monitoring the Phonics Screening Check
v)          To look at maladministration around the administration of the Phonics Screening Check
vi)         To look at reporting the Phonics Screening Check

Course Content:
i)            Discussion on Phonics audit from Session 1
ii)          Common difficulties to address
iii)         Strategies to close gaps. (teaching short/long vowels/split digraphs/pseudo words)
iv)         Making phonics fun! (game ideas for practice and application)
v)          Preparation for the Phonics Screening Check in June
vi)         How to prepare for the Phonics Screening Check
vii)        How the Phonics Screening Check is administered
viii)       How the Phonics Screening Check is monitored
ix)         How the Phonics Screening Check is reported
x)          Analysis of previous phonics checks to help in preparation
xi)         Planning interventions for pupils NOT on track to reach the standard (Y2)

Attendees are asked to arrive at the school by 9.15am to enable a prompt start to the session. Limited car parking is available on site with additional on-road parking opposite to the school.
